I had trouble with the color scheme for the first panel. In that panel they are entering in the region called the Gloaming.

Pelkern is a subterranean world. Deep underneath the surface of Pelkern there is an unbelievably vast Ocean, filled with massive mountain ranges. The “Kerns” are the lands found honeycombed within the mountains–these are the places where people are able to breathe and walk and live. There is a wide diversity of biomes you can find on Pelkern, but you can break them down into four categories:

1) The Bright Lands. These are wild lands overflowing with life and light. Like the Amazon jungle found on Earth, these Biomes are dangerous lands to tread, and only fools enter unprepared.

2) The Gloaming. The Gloaming is the name for the large zones that border Bright Lands. These Biomes are less dangerous than the Bright Lands, and it is here that the People of Pelkern make their dwellings and live out their lives.

3) The Tenebris. The Tenebris is where the Gloaming peters out into utter darkness. Not much, if anything, grows in the Tenebris, so the air grows thin. Lands that have been devastated by fire or other disasters often turn to Tenebris.

4) The Deeps. This is the Ocean outside the Kerns, and the People of Pelkern cannot survive or access it, but they know of its existence.

Paul the Striker

The Pelkern Cycle had an earlier phase that was based on a Sci-Fi premise. The coolest part of that idea were the elite warriors called Strikers who were trained to break through the force fields of cities. There was a lot that didn’t work with that particular story iteration, so I eventually shifted away from those ideas, but one of my favorite concept drawings is from that phase. This is a concept drawing depicting Sol as a Striker (also, his name was Paul then). He is holding a lantern filled with bio-luminescent flowers.

Page 32 will be up next week.

Lynn kinda looks like a bandit here, with the cloak wrapped over his face, but there’s all sorts of smoke and toxic stuff in the air. Cassius managed to shield baby Sol from most of it, but isn’t doing too well himself.

I still got the page up on Wednesday, hooray! I got called in to be a potential juror last week, and that knocked out the majority of last Thursday, work-wise. The computer program that randomly generates names out of the juror pool has fixated on my name, for some reason, so this is the 4th summons I’ve received in 5 years. This is the first time they’ve called my group in, though.

1 Year Anniversary for The Pelkern Cycle

Thursday will be the 1 year anniversary of when I posted the first page of The Pelkern Cycle. Hooray! Here is a drawing I drew for it. : )

I have improved at drawing characters quite a bit since I first started making comics 4 years ago. One thing I am still struggling with is showing the characters’s various heights. Ace is quite tall, an inch higher than his grandfather. Ace grew up with his grandfather’s height, but not with his grandfather’s ox-like bulk (much to Artor’s acute disappointment). Ace is 6 ft 6 in (198 cm), while Carolyn is 5 ft 5 in (165 cm).

Both last week and this week I have been working on a card that has The Pelkern Cycle’s info on it, and preparing the card for printing. It’ll be something I can use at conventions, and also for giving to people who ask about my comic in person. This is something I probably should have done a long time ago, haha. Next week I will post the card’s image instead of a page.

Early Process of a Comic Page: Script, Thumbnail, and Colorscripts

This is the early process work for Page 25.

I have 4 separate sketchbooks that I use in making this comic. They are: my Script-book, my Thumbnails Sketchbook, my Concepts Sketchbook (where I write ideas for the world and story), and my General Sketchbook where I hash out the details of the pages and do any number calculations. I do the colorscripts in Photoshop.

I have a story outline for The Pelkern Cycle, but the outline isn’t set in stone. Sometimes, as the characters develop in the story, I realize that some plot points I’ve planned for my characters aren’t consistent with who the characters have become. When that happens, I shift the plot to match the characters. As a result, I write each chapter’s script after finishing the comic pages for the preceding chapter. I will write the script and do the thumbnails for Chapter 3 all in one batch once I finish Chapter 2.

Here’s another preview of the upcoming page, and the reason this page is taking so long–There are a lot of characters on this page, including 4 who haven’t appeared yet in this comic. This is Panel 5. From left to right, Carolyn’s 3 younger brothers Kevin, Oren, and Vincent, her mother Maia, an unknown man, and her father Myles. 🙂

I’m still coloring this page, but it should go up today (Thursday), probably in the evening.
